Here’s a real-life example of how our consulting services recently helped a client properly plan technology systems for a new, yet-to-be-built home:
A man planning a 13,000 square foot home in the New Jersey countryside for his family saw the benefits of an EDG installed custom home theater, lighting control system, and integrated Creston control panel during a party at a neighbor’s house. The gentleman got EDG’s contact information, and contacted us about installing a home movie theater in the great room of his new home, a dedicated, high-performance theater for watching football, as well as a high quality, distributed whole house audio and video system.
The gentleman toured EDG’s 20,000 square foot headquarters, including our engineering and programming departments, conference room, demonstration theater, and the production and rack-building area where we pre-build and test systems before they’re installed. After touring our facility, he became a client, and honored EDG with a contract to work with his architect and the builder affiliate on the desired technology systems. The project ended up running 2-1/2 years at a cost of over $400,000.
EDG’s challenge was to integrate the desired systems without compromising the home’s design, where every window was positioned to view a specific part of the property. We generated AutoCAD plans which were incorporated into the architect’s advanced 3-D computer rendering programs to give the family a 360-degree, photorealistic view of their home as it was being designed.
The end result was a lower-level, dedicated theater, designed by the architect and outfitted by EDG, featuring an eight-seat tiered theater, plus a four-seat bar, 117-inch screen and a Runco DLP home theater projector, plus an integrated entertainment system and home automation controls. The theater package includes a large multi aspect ratio projection screen and a projector that is neatly located in the rear of the room. Depending on the design requirements the projector can be placed tight to the ceiling, semi recessed into the ceiling or hidden away behind a projection view port in another room. The speakers can be placed in many locations to provide the highest performance or completely hidden behind the screen to provide the best aesthetic performance.
Acoustical wall panels are typically included in this package to reduce the amount of sound that escapes into the rest of the home as well as improving the general theatrical experience of the room.
Theater seating is designed into the space to increase the quality of the experience and provide the maximum number of people for a space.
Room Isolation: Different construction methods are provided to increase the STC (Sound Transfer Coefficient) of the construction. The sound from the theater should stay in the theater. That is accomplished with construction methods, additional layers of Sheetrock and minimal amount of penetrations through the environment.
Determining the most appropriate speakers for a home requires a balance of performance, decor and cost. These days, impressive sound can be produced from a variety of speaker types: a single-cabinet stereo speaker, or speaker pairs that rest on bookshelves, on the floor, or mount flush into walls or ceilings. EDG designers will design a system using suitable speakers for a given space to ensure the proper coverage at a cost-effective price. Many professionally designed systems incorporate a combination of speaker types for each project depending on the room.
Today’s music fans have more music choices than ever before. At EDG, we accommodate all our clients’ favorite music sources from iTunes, Internet radio, and satellite music to CDs, FM radio and even LPs. We provide our customers easy access to their favorite music wherever they are in or outside of the house — along with the flexibility for family members to choose their own music for a given room or zone. We group rooms or areas into logical zones that make a music system simpler and more convenient to use. That way jazz lovers can listen to Miles Davis in one room while pop music fans listen to Beyonce in another. Volume can be controlled separately for each space. Most important, EDG designers create systems that are easy to control with a keypad, a touch panel or even by iPhone or iPad. Intuitive operation allows you to select the music you want to hear without having to know where it resides.
The parts of the home that have the most impact are the formal rooms of the home such as the foyer, living, and dining room. These areas have a tendency to have more than four groups of light. Other areas that can create problems are the main hallways and stair landings. When you come to a stair landing there are several decisions that need to be made. Are you going up the stairs, down the stairs or just walking down the hallway. Trying to deliver that kind of flexibility with conventional switching is just not possible.
Our lighting control design is broken down into four different categories, aesthetic gain, wall switch reduction, modified system management and overall system management.
Aesthetic Gain: Large rooms in finely designed homes typically have more than four groups of light in a room. The room may have chandeliers, sconces, table lamps and recessed lighting. The problem that is created is a very large bank of switches that is difficult to control and an eyesore to look at. Dimmers can be consolidated in to a preset dimming control so the room can be turned on from a simple press of a button. This allows the home owner to comfortably use the room without trying to remember which button did what. This can be done on a room by room basis with nominal increase in cost.
Wall Switch Reduction: Today’s finely designed spaces have multiple types of fixtures for each room. To offer the best level of control, multiple switches are located at the entry points of a room. A five or six gang switch plate is very difficult to work around when designing an important aesthetic space. The areas that are typically affected by the large gangs of switch plates are also the important rooms of the home. Our approach is to reduce the switches down to a one or two gang programmable keypad that offers preset scene control. The scenes are used to recall the proper amount of light for a given scenario.
Modified System Management: Taking the wall switch reduction method to the next step would connect the important rooms together so that the hallways and house exterior are connected together as a system. This would allow our client to walk from the front door to the kitchen and then up to the master bedroom all by pressing buttons on a few properly located keypads. The coverage for this configuration typically includes the main floor, upper hallways and the master suite, house exterior and the main areas of the finished basement. A combination of keypads and local smart switches are used to keep the cost of the project down.
Overall System Management: Allows our client to manage the entire space by providing total control of the bathrooms, bedrooms rooms, landscape, garage lights and mechanical spaces as well as the spaces mentioned above. Providing this level of control allows our clients to manage their space for total energy management. At night or when leaving the residence our client simply presses a button and walks out knowing that only the desired lights were left on.
Electronics Design Group has developed a Game room environment with Maingear, a manufacturer of some of the top gaming PC’s in the industry.
The game room design can be implemented in any size room. The smaller the better. There needs to be space for three or four chairs for all your friends and enough room for a large screen TV or projection screen.
A small projector can be placed in a convenient location to provide the largest possible image. An LED or LCD monitor allows for interactive gaming like Nintendo Wii or Xbox Kinect. If racing or flight simulators are their interest then special chairs and controls must be designed into the space in lieu of chairs.
The audio plays a very important role for the gamer. Games are developed with 7.1 sound to add to the experience. Some gamers prefer to use a high performance set of head phones to provide the best sound performance. Many games offer on line collaboration so a special set of head phones with microphone are used.
This design package takes all of that into account and provides for connectivity at the seat, a place to keep the high performance PC, room isolation so that the rest of the house does not need to participate in the gamer experience, comfortable seating to allow for those long game sessions.

Our system designs take into account the monitor layout, desk, seating and lighting for the space to produce the most comfortable environment. The heart of the traders system is the PC and monitor layout. A custom PC with multiple video cards is provided to provide seamless control over all the information you need to conduct your business. The layout of the monitors are personal and may be unique to each clients needs. This solution provides for six monitors of differing resolution and size. The focal point is based on a large main monitor and surrounding monitors to provide the most up to date information. A single monitor can be configured for a Cable TV signal.
The monitor configuration and PC are designed as a set but the furniture can be designed around your needs.
Lighting fixtures have been specified for this solution because having the right amount of light is critical to the success to this application
Network, phone, cable TV, surveillance and WiFi all require some wired connection to make them operate. Jacks should be located where needed and easily accessible. Wireless devices are so abundant today that we cannot rely on the wireless router provided by the Internet provider to do the job. Devices need to be carefully located so that seamless connectivity is available anywhere on the property, including outdoor areas.
The cable TV set top box requires special planning because they rarely go under the TV as they once did. With the onset of the super thin TV, there is little room to hide the wires. Special ones like HDMI have limited distance capabilities. Current TVs now have applications that allow them to stream video and audio directly from the Internet.

Our stealth media room designs can incorporate a projection screen or a large panel TV. Small, unassuming projectors can be incorporated into soffits and millwork to provide the largest visual experience possible. Drop down screens can be carefully designed into the ceiling plan so the screen or TV does not become the focal point of the room until necessary. For the ultimate experience we have provided a sample of a large projection screen and drop down or pop up projector for the evening and a large pop up TV for day time viewing.

Our sports bar package will allow our clients to view up to eight or more different sporting events at the same time. This is accomplished via a video matrix switch with an easy to use touch panel interface. Displays are placed in the room so that every seat in the space has easy access to more than one video display. The sound is managed through a matrix switch so the end user can decide which audio source they would like to listen to. Sometimes the satellite radio broadcast is better than the on screen broadcast, so the sat radio would also be incorporated into our design.
Large display vs. multiple displays:
There is nothing like a large display to best capture the visual experience of a live sporting event. Our design package incorporates a single large display and multiple smaller displays located in the space.

Subwoofers can be placed in the ceiling as well. Equipment shall be located in a pull out rack of equipment or in a remote location.
Think about walking around the pool and outdoor dining areas of a luxury resort. The music is always with you, and the volume is at a reasonable level. Therefore, designing an optimum outdoor sound system requires more thought than just placing a few speakers around your backyard. The proper design begins with a clear understanding of the project plans and optimal use of the space.
The example system was based on a recently completed system where the areas of this backyard were previously designed with a large built in pool, pool house, basketball court and a fire pit area. One side of the pool was open up to a flat grassy area with no ground cover or landscaping. The other side provided a short retaining wall and a planting area that went the length of the pool. The satellite speakers were placed in the plantings. A direct burial subterranean subwoofer was planted in the beds to provide a complete outdoor audio system. The pool house had a pair of speakers carefully located in the pergola to extend the sound around the pool or to provide local sound for when the pool was not in use. The basketball/tennis court had a similar system installed. A direct burial subwoofer was planted near the court fence and speakers were applied along the perimeter of the fence surrounding the basketball/tennis court. The fire pit was a much smaller more intimate space so a pair of full range speakers that looked like landscape light fixtures were used.
This property required an extensive amount of underground conduit be installed in the backyard. Conduit for electrical, pool, security, CCTV and music all had to be integrated into the property. Our plans called for 2” conduit to be run from the AV headend room in the main house out to the respective areas. The 2” conduits terminated in medium sized direct burial enclosures placed near plantings so they were not visible to most people. The enclosures allowed the 2” conduit to be broken down into smaller flexible conduits or direct burial wires and out to the speakers. The 2” conduits were installed by the site electrician and coordinated with the builder.
The music system was controlled from a control panel in the pool house and from any control panel in the main house. The sound was balanced via the matrix audio preamplifier that was used as part of the main house music system.
Control of the audio system will be designed around easy-to-use touch panels and wireless controls. The wireless tablet has allowed EDG to design more robust systems because of their user acceptance.
